eye can see

After 2 months of having contact lens issues, I finally have it all sorted out. I learned I couldn't see under normal circumstances when I was 13 years old. At the time, my parents were going through a divorce, and my mom didn't have a lot of money to spare. In addition, I was going through puberty, growing boobs and getting zits, AND having crushes on boys. So as you can imagine, it was a real awkward stage of my life. So my Mom took me to see the eye doctor and sure enough, I needed glasses. (I wish I had a picture of my first pair of glasses handy, because ...DANG, I looked good.) I guess at that age though, it was cool to have glasses and/or braces. I don't know WHAT exactly was so cool about either of those things, but I assure you, where I come from, it was!

Then when I was 15, all that stuff suddenly became uncool. At that age, you're easily embarrassed by everything your parents do and the clothes you wear...and the car you get dropped off in, etc. I already had all that crap going on, so I wasn't about to be less cool by having glasses! In enter contact lenses. I remember the first visit to the doc to get fitted for contacts. It straight up took me 3 hours to get those stupid things in my eye balls, but once I did, it was like I was seeing for the first time. I didn't get the hang of it putting them in and taking them out for about 2 months though. Thankfully, my Mother wasn't creeped out by touching her daughter's eyeballs twice a day. As I previously mentioned, she didn't have a lot of extra money, so I of course got the cheapest brand of lenses available. I never wanted to ask her for more money, so I always over-wore my lenses, usually until one of them ripped or something.

Up until 2 months ago, I purchased and wore those same brand of lenses. Well at my most recent visit to my new eye doctor, he asked about my job and how my eyes felt on the daily basis, to which I realized that my eyes would get tired by days end. I sit at the computer for 8+ hours a day and I rarely look away. It's not that I don't want to look away...I just have work to be done and sometimes I get in the "zone." So the doc gave me a trial pair of a new (and more expensive) brand of lenses. In the moment, I realized I can now afford to pay a little extra for these new lenses, so I went for it! I tried the lenses out for two weeks and noticed a distinct change in my vision. My eyes weren't as tired. I also noticed it only took me about 5-10 minutes for my eyes to adjust on the drive home, whereas before, it'd take about 2 hours.

So about a month ago, I picked up my contacts. I wore the trial pair for another week and then decided to open a fresh, new, exciting pair! I had been involved in a bit of daytime (and nighttime) drinking the day before, so when I woke up to put in my new pair, I noticed my eyes were a little fuzzy. I assumed it was just me being a little sleepy from the previous day, but to my astonishment it wasn't! When I got to work and sat at my desk, I look to the board only 10 feet away from me and could not read a single thing! In fact, when I removed the contacts, I could see the board better. I excused myself from work, and went to the ladies room, where I proceeded to cry in the stall for the next few minutes. I was sooo mad that I couldn't see. I felt like my 13 year old self again, crying that I needed vision correction in the first place. Ten phone calls back and forth, five trips to the doc's office, a repeat vision exam, and two more trial pairs....later, we've discovered that perhaps the boxes I purchased were defect. (ya think!?)

I know this is entirely too long to be talking about my vision, but I just needed to let someone know that I sure am happy I can see again.
